Vor wenigen Wochen machte die Website milliondollardigit.com von Jesse Distad Schlagzeilen im Internet. Distad wollte sich für 1 Million Dollar den Finger abhacken lassen, um so seinen Kindern eine Ausbildung und ein gutes Leben zu ermöglichen. Via PayPal sollte man Geld spenden und damit entscheiden, ob sich Distad den Finger abhacken soll oder er ihn behalten soll. Die Variante, die als erstes einen Spendenbetrag von 1 Million Dollar erreicht, sollte umgesetzt werden. Doch schnell kamen Stimmen auf, dass es sich nur um einen Fake handeln kann, den der SEO-Profi da umsetzt. Erste Indizien gab es, nachdem die Counter mehrere Tage jeweils auf 0 Dollar standen, obwohl die Website gut besucht war (am 20.November allein 14198 Unique Visitors). Und den Zweiflern wird auch recht gegeben…von Jesse Distad persönlich.
Auf seiner Finger-Abhack-Website liest man jetzt die Nachricht: „While this was a short lived experiment, it was indeed an interesting one.. In total, there have been over 30,000 visitors to this page this week. I have received many interesting comments and a few e-mails.. I’m pulling the plug on this today, gathering my info and seeing what I can do with it. To those who donated, you will be receiving a full refund of your donations. Thanks for your participation. on this, take care everyone…“ Ein Experiment also, das ein wenig an Splatter-Movies erinnert. Allerdings war die Aktion viral ein voller Erfolg, denn über kaum eine andere Website wurde in den letzten Wochen mehr berichtet, als über die „Finger-Abhack-Seite“ von Jesse Distad. Alle Spender, egal ob sie sie für oder gegen die Abhackaktion entschieden haben, bekamen ihr Geld zurück.

I would post this comment in German but the German I learned in 8th grade has for the most part been forgotten (or what I do remember would probably not make sense lol)
I have a short update for anyone that is interested, the milliondollardigit site received a total of 38,557 unique visitors in one week, which is far more than I had anticipated.
As you stated, it seems people are drawn to the grotesque like moths to a flame, ironically out of all those people who visited the site only 6 donated for a total of $15.00 US (which has all been refunded) as you noticed the counter was at $0 for quite some time, initially because it was not working but after that because there had been no donations lol.. SO in order to spur on the traffic I added in some amounts manually to give it the look of success, after doing that $13 of the $15 total in donations came in, so it seems that nobody wanted to be the first to donate which is what I expected to happen.
I will be using the knowledge gained by this experiment to help legitimate fund raising ventures and to assist in marketing for other projects. Thanks for your participation.

Mich würde interessieren, ob man mit der PayPal Zahlung an den Webmaster nicht eine Art Vertrag abgeschlossen hat und jetzt möglicherweise darauf pochen könnte, dass er wirklich seinen Finger abhacken muss.
